A smart kiosk for safer grocery shopping.
A smart kiosk for safer grocery shopping.
This project was inspired by conversations with elders in my family who often spoke about health problems linked to their eating habits. That got me curious. As I started digging deeper, I discovered that over 56% of diseases in India are related to poor dietary choices. What stood out to me even more was how confusing, inaccessible, and easy to ignore food labels still are—despite their importance.

With 74 million diabetics, 35% of adults with hypertension, and a rise in allergies and specific diets like vegan, keto, and halal, it’s clear grocery shoppers need better support.

What’s stopping shoppers from making safer food choices in-store?
To understand how shoppers make safe food choices in supermarkets, I explored their real-world grocery habits using both quantitative and qualitative methods. This included a survey of 30+ participants (ages 25–65), interviews with 3 adults with medical conditions and 2 adults with dietary preferences. I also analyzed existing food safety tools and food barcode scanning apps to spot gaps and opportunities.

To ensure the solution addressed real and diverse user needs, I developed personas of two users. In addition, I framed the problem statement and defined measurable success criteria to guide design decisions and evaluate the solution’s impact.

Problem Statement
Shoppers with medical conditions or dietary restrictions lack an easy, accessible way to verify if a product is safe for them—leading to confusion, anxiety, and potential health risks during grocery shopping.

To explore this, I began sketching key interactions that would allow users to check food safety quickly and confidently. These early concepts shaped a focused user flow centered on three actions: scanning a product, receiving clear alerts, and discovering safer alternatives in the store.

Using Figma, I built a mid-fidelity prototype and conducted usability testing with 3 users. The feedback confirmed that the flow felt intuitive—users were able to navigate the screens and understand key features instantly, without needing assistance.
